DURHAM, N.C. -

A former Boy Scout leader in Durham has been charged with sex crimes against a child.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office said John Herbert Adams, 50, of Bahama, took nude photos of a girl between the age of 3 and 4 years old sometime between January 2010 and April of this year.

Adams is charged with second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and indecent liberties of a child. He was arrested on Thursday and released on a $75,000 bond on Monday.

Upon learning of the arrest, the Boy Scouts of America dismissed Adams from his position. Spokesman John Akerman told WNCN the situation has nothing to do with their organization.

"All of our leaders are required to go through a youth protection training course," Akerman said. "We never let leaders work with kids on-on-one. There's always going to be two leaders present."

Akerman said scout leaders also go through criminal background checks.

Nobody answered when WNCN went to Adams' home. Neighbors said the allegations against him made them nervous.

"Unfortunately, you never really know ... who your neighbors are until something like this happens," Flora Krueger said. "I think it's a very uncomfortable feeling.

"Those aren't the type of people I like to surround myself [with] in my neighborhood, so it's really not a comfortable feeling, especially for people in the neighborhood that have small children."
