Martin County removes its animal gas chamber

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSTON, N.C. - A new beginning for Martin County's Animal Shelter, and an end for its gas chamber.

Martin County officials plan to remove its gassing chamber on Thursday.

In April, the county officially stopped euthanizing animals using gas.

County manager, David Bone, says the electronics and gas connections have already been removed.

In January, the shelter got a $10,000 grant from the Humane Society of the United States.

The grant helped fund humane euthanasia and improvements to the shelter.

Beaufort and Wilson counties are the only counties in Eastern North Carolina still using gas chambers.
