Superheroes unite to promote reading

Posted: Updated:
Two Pitt County School art teachers are teaming up with a dynamic duo of superheroes, all in an effort to get students excited about reading.

The teachers are creating a wall mural in promote Free Comic Book Day at local comic book shop ‘Nostalgia Newsstand’ near downtown Greenville. The mural features both Batman and Spiderman.

“We thought it would be good way to help promote reading to kids because kids get interested in the characters that are in the comics and help them get excited and interested in reading. It helps to promote art too” said muralist Jett Harrell.

The comic book store is donating comic books for the teachers’ classrooms to help in the effort.

Free Comic Book Day is held every May by publishers. Kids can come by for a free comic to take home.

Walter Alligood has been teaching at Farmville Middle for four years, and Jett Harrell has been teaching at Lakeforest Elementary school for 3 years and has worked for Pitt County schools for 8 years.

Both art teachers call themselves comic book enthusiasts.
