Man charged with DWI in Onslow Co. fatal accident

SWANSBORO, N.C. - One man has been charged after a fatal accident in Onslow County.

1st Sgt. David Oglesby with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened Wednesday, April 23rd at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Crown Point Rd, just off of Sanders Dr. near Swansboro.

The driver of the vehicle, Michael Ray Chappell, 39, was driving a 1995 Toyota 4Runner, off of Sanders Rd. onto Crown Point Rd when he over-corrected twice and flipped the vehicle. Oglesby says Chappell was driving too fast for road conditions, and was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Douglas Couser, 37, was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle at the time of the accident. Couser was not wearing a seat belt, partially ejected from and pinned under the vehicle. Couser died on the scene.

Chappell was arrested for a DWI and had a blood alcohol level of 0.10. He was charged with wreckless driving and felony death by motor vehicle and placed in the Onslow County Detention Center under at $20,000 bond.
