Sanders Clyde Elementary School teacher named CCSD Teacher of the Year finalist

Posted: Updated:
Charleston County School District has announced it's top five finalists for district teacher of the year. This week, we will introduce you to the district's top teachers.

Charles Atkins teaches drama at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School. Mr. Atkins spent eight years in the automobile industry before joining the teaching community of Charleston County School District. His passion for student achievement and success, followed by his passion for the arts has compelled him to develop an authentic artistic learning environment at Sanders-Clyde Elementary.

Through partnerships, Mr. Atkins has developed an opportunity for students to "engage in creative processes so they can connect an art form and subject area to meet academic as well as artistic objectives." Atkins says, "Hard work, pounding that rock on a daily basis. It feels great to be in the top five for Charleston County Schools Teacher of the Year." Mr. Atkins says, "No matter how challenging, difficult, or dysfunctional a young person's environment, he or she can foster a love for education through discovery in the classroom with a highly skilled and passionate teacher."

The district teacher of the year will receive a year's lease on a mini cooper from Mini of Charleston. CCSD will announce the top teacher on May 1st, during the Riverdogs game.
