Fundraiser to be held for shooting victim

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Several people are planning to hold a fundraiser in Greenville on Sunday to benefit Vernon Leggett, one of the victims in the Greenville Wal-Mart shooting last June.

Leggett was shot three times as he tried to distract the shooter so the shooter didn't enter any stores.

He was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. Leggett's kidney, gall bladder and spleen were eventually removed.

Organizers say being able to help Leggett means a lot to them.

"To me, he's a true hero," said Gary Salt, one of the organizers. "He has displayed a courage that very few people have. And I get emotional sometimes when I talk about it."

The fundraiser will be at Live, a local night club in Greenville, on Sunday April 27 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

If you would like to donate to the cause but can't make it to the fundraiser, funds can be sent directly to the Leggett family at 5414 NC Hwy 33 East, Greenville, NC 27858.
