NC lab for pirate ship artifacts holds open house

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The conservation lab that handles the artifacts from the flagship of Blackbeard the pirate is holding an open house.

The lab in Greenville is holding an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Visitors will have the chance to meet and talk with archaeologists and conservators who are investigating and documenting the Queen Anne's Revenge and will learn about an artifact's journey from recovery to display.

The lab is located on East Carolina University's West Research Campus.  The open house is free and open to the public.

Blackbeard captured a French slave ship and renamed it Queen Anne's Revenge in 1717. Volunteers with the Royal Navy killed Blackbeard in Ocracoke Inlet the following year, five months after the ship sank.

The shipwreck was discovered in 1996.
