11-month-old dies following ENC tornadoes

Posted: Updated:
An 11-month-old boy was killed following a string of tornadoes in eastern North Carolina Friday.

The Department of Public Safety confirms that an 11-month-old in Chowan County was injured in Friday's storms and died Sunday, April 27th. The 11-month-old was the first tornado related death in the nation of 2014.

A fundraiser account was set up by a family member to help the mother during this difficult time. The website says 11-month-old Gavin Soto was in the home with his mother when the roof crashed down on them.

Governor Pat McCrory sent his prayers to the family and the 11-month-old at an afternoon press conference Sunday, while touring the devastation in Beaufort County.

Governor McCrory continued his tour in Edenton around 2:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service confirms two EF2 tornadoes went through Chowan County on Friday.
