2 die in Shelby wreck; 1 person charged with DWI

Posted: Updated:

Police in Shelby have identified two people killed in a weekend wreck and a suspect faces a variety of charges.

Police say 55-year-old Dorman Pompey and 55-year-old Frances Pompey of Lawndale died in the wreck Saturday. A 12-year-old grandson was hurt in the wreck. He's being treated in a Charlotte hospital.

Police say their vehicle was hit by a drunken driver running from officers. An officer had stopped the chase because of some downtown activities that had crowded the streets.

Thirty-four-year-old Demetrist Lendell Roberts of Shelby has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, failure to stop for police, driving with a revoked license and speeding. It was not clear if Roberts has an attorney.
