Morehead City woman arrested after striking man with a lantern

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Carteret County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a woman in Morehead City who was caught in the act during a burglary.

Deputies said 26-year-old Amy Mabes of Morehead City was arrested at 3:45 in the afternoon on Saturday, April 26.

Morehead City Police had responded to a call at a house on River Bluff Road where the homeowner was bleeding from his head and holding Mabes down waiting for the police to arrive.

The Sheriff's office said the victim was a 70-year-old man who told police he caught Mabes stealing items from his garage when he confronted her. The man told police Mabes then struck him in the head with a glass and metal lantern during the confrontation.

Police arrested Mabes and said they found several stolen items in her possession including jewelry and coins.

Mabes lives about one mile from the victim according to the Sherrif's Office, and they believe she traveled on foot.

The victim was transported to Carteret General Hospital. The Sherrif's Office said they are not sure of his current condition.

Mabes is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, and possession of burglary tools.

She was placed in the Carteret County Jail under $40,000 bond. Her first court appearance is on Monday.
