How to help tornado victims

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Right after a storm, the needs are great: food, water and shelter. Eastern North Carolina is responding to those needs.

But what is the best way to help? Is it giving clothes or non-perishable foods? The American Red Cross says to donate money.

"Some of these families don't have anywhere to go. They're staying in a hotel.” Summer Woodard said,
“A can of food does not help them stay in that hotel. They can't cook it. So they need a hot cooked meal that the Red Cross is providing to them.”

What about clothing?

"When something like this happens you want your own clothing, you want something new that belongs to you and it just helps that we give them cash and they go out and buy clothes that fits them." Woodard said.

Listening to their needs is Tony Tripp, a Washington business owner (Washington Crab & Seafood Shack). "We’re going to do a 10% donation to give to the Red Cross this week and we challenge the other restaurants that did not sustain any kind of damage to match that."

The Red Cross says with the donated money, they are feeding families, putting gas in vehicles to do client case work, getting volunteers right into the community to give families financial assistance.

Giving of your time is another way to help. The Red Cross says volunteers are needed to answer phones, help with clean up and to help with many other tasks.
