DURHAM, N.C. -

Police are investigating the death of a 9-year-old boy who was found shot inside a Durham home.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Macon Street around 9:40 p.m. Monday in reference to a shooting. When they arrived, officers found 9-year-old Christian Pittman, who had died from an apparent gunshot wound.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the incident was an accidental shooting involving juveniles.

Police have not disclosed the circumstance surrounding the shooting, however Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez stressed the importance of locking up guns inside homes so children can't get their hands on them.

"The incident on Macon Street not only underscores the importance of responsible gun ownership, but painfully demonstrates the irreversible, adverse effects when practical gun safety measures are not put into practice," Lopez said. "Safety must be a priority when there are firearms in the home. Be sure to keep them secured and away from children.

"We also recommend using gun locks so that the guns can't be fired by accident."

Police said it is unknown if any charges will be filed.
