SeaWorld trainers wearing new safety vests around killer whales

Posted: Updated:
ORLANDO, F.L. - SeaWorld Orlando trainers began wearing new custom-designed emergency vests this week.

The safety improvements come in the wake of a killer whale trainer's death in 2010.

Trainers at all of SeaWorld's theme parks who work in close proximity of the killer whales are wearing the new vests which become buoyant with the pull of a cord.  The emergency vest also has a small scuba tank and regulator to provide a few minutes of air.  The vests are lightweight and can break away so trainers can ditch them if necessary.

SeaWorld worked on creating the vest for more than three years testing different prototypes in trying to find the best technology.
