High school seniors learn to perform CPR

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Students across Pitt County are learning how to perform CPR. The state's requiring that all students learn the skill before graduating high school.

Tuesday morning-- about two dozen volunteers taught students at D.H. Conley High School -- how to perform hands-only CPR. They also learned how to use an AED.

Instructors say this lesson is especially vital for students living in rural areas where response times hover around 10 minutes.

"Without people doing that, some people don't survive.” Mary Printz said.

The program is already seeing success. Eight days after a South Central High School student learned how to perform CPR, her grandfather suffered cardiac arrest and the student saved his life.

Students value the lesson and say it could help.

"Anything can happen any day. You can be at your job, somebody can go into cardiac arrest.” Magen Flannagan said. “And you could save someone's life.”
