ROANOKE - It was a special night for a special education teacher in the Star City.

Matthew Newton has been selected as Roanoke's 2014 Teacher of the Year.

The choice was announced tonight during a banquet at the Jefferson Center earlier tonight, May 1st.

Newton is a special education teacher at Fishburn Park Elementary and has been with the school system for four years.

"Matthew is truly deserving of this award. He is a wonderful teacher and all you have to do is spend time in his classroom to know how much he cares about children," said Dr. Rita Bishop, Superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools.

Newton will now represent Roanoke in the Region 6 Teacher of the Year competition.
