A local leader is happy to see Route 220 improvements coming to northern Botetourt County, but more work needs to be done.
Delegate Terry Austin said he's worked hard during his first term in Richmond to get the necessary funding.
For both safety and to help the Alleghany Highlands economically, Austin wants Route 220 to eventually become a four lane road.
"Ultimately that's our goal, we want four lanes and we conveyed that to VDOT," he said. "But we're acknowledging the fact of limited revenues, limited opportunities. For now we'll get two lanes, high speed, and eight foot shoulders in most places."
VDOT will initially invest $78 million in the project, but that number is expected to double as work progresses.
The plan will go before the Commonwealth Transportation Board for final approval in Jun
