Blacksburg continues work toward environmentally friendly construction

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG - The town of Blacksburg is working toward environmental sustainability by requiring that all major town construction and renovation be LEED certified.  The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) has established a rating system of certified, silver, gold and platinum based on environmental friendliness and sustainability factors in the construction phase and the structure itself.

Although Blacksburg has required all projects to have at least a silver rating since 2008, the town is working to get more buildings above and beyond that, such as the Blacksburg Motor Company, which received a platinum rating.

The Alexander Black House is currently in its renovation phase, and while this presents more challenges than a new building when it comes to LEED projects, town leaders are hoping this can serve as an example that historic buildings can still be put on the cutting edge of environmentally friendly technology and practices.
