Roanoke County Economic Development Officials say libraries create foot traffic.
They say people use libraries for research and people want to live near libraries because it enhances their quality of life.
Roanoke County Economic Development Director Jill Loope says investing in downtown libraries like the one in Vinton could attract more businesses to the area.
Library officials say with new technology like Mac computers and small cinema rooms like the ones at South County Library it creates an atmosphere that most people would want come and hang out.
"We're really trying to make libraries a destination place for people to come, kind of a community center for them to kind of hang out," Michael Meise Assistant Director for Roanoke County Public Library said.
