Update: Police release more information on body found in Clifton Forge

Posted: Updated:
CLIFTON FORGE - UPDATE 8:20 a.m.

Police in Clifton Forge are releasing more information today about a body they found last night.  Clifton Forge Police Chief Barry Balser tells WSLS that the body of 60-year-old Norman Edward Craft was found near the A Street Bridge Monday evening around 7 p.m.

Chief Balser says the investigation began Friday morning, after Craft was reported missing by his brother on the evening of Thursday, May 1.  His brother told police he hadn’t spoken with Craft in several days.  Police began searching for the missing man throughout the weekend.

Yesterday police spotted Craft twice on surveillance video from a store he visits a lot.  In the video he was wearing a toboggan hat similar to one police found near a swinging bridge over the Jackson River.  Police brought in helicopters to search the area, with no success.

Last night around 7 p.m., a man and his family were out on a walk when they noticed a shirt and body in the Jackson River below the A Street Bridge.  They called in police, who called in the Botetourt County and Fallen Springs swift water rescue teams.  Craft was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, police do not believe there is any suspicious activity at play.  Craft’s body has been sent to a medical examiner.  Police are continuing their investigation as they wait on an autopsy.
