NEW DETAILS: Former Pitt County Sheriff facing assault charge

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former Pitt County Sheriff Mac Manning is facing a an assault charge after his wife called police reporting he hit her.

Manning turned himself in to the Pitt County magistrate's office around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Greenville Police tell 9 On Your Side Manning is charged with one count of assault on a female.  Detectives say Manning's wife called the Greenville Police Dept. around 10 a.m. Monday after the two got into an argument.  In Manning's arrest warrant, police say he slapped his wife on the hand two times, causing bruising, swelling and blood blisters.

Manning's next court appearance is set for May 14th. 

9 On Your Side asked Manning for a comment as he left the Pitt County Magistrates Office and declined our request.

Mac Manning served as Pitt County Sheriff for more than a decade.  He lost his re-election bid for Sheriff to Neil Elks in May 2010.
