Puppies trained to aid wounded veterans

Posted: Updated:
MARYLAND - It's an adorable moment anytime a litter of puppies arrives but a group of dog trainers in Maryland is working with a very special set of pups.  They're bringing the little ones up for an important role: helping our nation's wounded veterans.

Each year, the Warrior Canine Connection welcomes two or three litters at their Maryland headquarters.  Over about 12 weeks puppy petters acclimate the dogs to all kinds of humans before they begin training in earnest for bigger tasks.

Trained dogs are eventually matched with veterans like Sgt. Justin Lanford who just got paired with a golden retriever named Gabe.

"Gabe helps me a lot, physically,” said Sgt. Lanford.  “He helps me with balance- with the balance aspect of wearing the prosthetic and everything."
