Forest likes NC endowment fund for teacher pay

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Dan Forest hopes the General Assembly will get behind his proposal to create a special fund to supplement teacher pay in North Carolina.

Forest and Sen. Jerry Tillman presented legislation Wednesday to an oversight committee about the North Carolina Education Endowment. Forest's office said it will be introduced in the legislature's annual session starting next week.

Individuals and businesses could make endowment donations and receive a tax deduction, or have part of their tax refunds earmarked for the fund. He also wants to create a special license plate supporting the fund. Forest says he ultimately wants to reward teachers through the fund's earned interest.

Forest attended Gov. Pat McCrory's teacher pay announcement Wednesday in Greensboro. Forest called the endowment idea another piece of the puzzle for rewarding teachers.
