Ayden man charged with filling dead father's prescription

Posted: Updated:
AYDEN, N.C. - The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged an Ayden man Wednesday for allegedly filling his father's prescription for oxycodone after his father had died.

Deputies say they were notified by a local pharmacy about possible prescription fraud back in March.

Officials say during an investigation they learned that Michael Puryear, 27, who lives off of Second Street in Ayden, contacted a medical facility where his father was being treated and asked them to issue his father’s monthly prescriptions, and that he would be picking them up for his father.   Detectives say it was determined that Puryear’s father had died about a week before this request was made.  Deputies say Puryear then filled one of his father’s prescriptions for 120 doses of oxycodone, a schedule II controlled substance.

Wednesday, Puryear was arrested and charged with one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or forgery.

He was taken to the Pitt County Detention Center but was released on $2,500 secured bond.
