NC proponents, opponents of same-sex marriage mark anniversary

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - Another turn in the debate over same-sex marriage.
Two years ago Thursday, voters across North Carolina approved an amendment that effectively bans those unions.

And today, people on both sides of the issue held rallies across the state. .

The amendment to the states constitution makes it unconstitutional for the state of North Carolina to recognize or perform same-sex marriages or civil unions.
The pro-amendment rally is also taking aim at recent efforts to overturn the ban.
Last month, some clergy members filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutional ban on gay marriage, saying it violated their religious freedom.
More than 60 percent of voters approved the amendment in 2012.
