The Sarasota Police Department has launched a battery investigation into a teacher who was seen on video screaming at a student.

On March 31, Sarasota Military Academy math teacher Jeffrey Daughtry was recorded on a cell phone camera screaming at a student.

The teen had been disruptive and Daughtry yelled at him to sit down saying, “Open your mouth again and you will die!”

He was later fired.

Earlier this week, the Sarasota Military Academy Board of Directors announced that Daughtry will be reinstated and provided recorded tutorials from home. He will then be allowed to resign at the end of the school year.

The boy’s father met with a police detective on April 30 to file a report.

The father said he did not want to get Daughtry in trouble or have him lose his job. He just wished that Daughtry would apologize to the boy and his family.

The detective interviewed some other students about the incident as well.

The brother of the student told News Channel 8 harmful messages were written about the teen on a Facebook page.

In the report, the police detective had asked the administrator of the Facebook page to take it down.

At this time, the page has not been removed. It has instead been set to private.

A police spokesperson says detectives still need to interview more family members so charges have not been filed at this time.
