Celebration, well-wishes as ECU graduates 3,800

GREENVILLE, N.C. - There’s a lot of celebrating and well-wishes in Greenville this afternoon.

Graduates at East Carolina University turned their tassels just a short time ago and received their much-deserved degrees.

Friday morning, 3,800 students marched in to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium to pomp and circumstance.

The school's outgoing provost Dr. Marilyn Sheerer gave this year's commencement address.

"We have the chance to reinvent ourselves," Dr. Sheerer said. "To evolve our identities and service to a greater extent and internalize the perspective that being open to difference is essential to successful living."

With their families and friends cheering them on, it was a memorable morning for pirate grads.

"So excited, but at the same time slightly depressed because I have to leave the school I love the most,” said Martin Pawlak Jr., ECU grad. “East Carolina pirates always bleed purple. Love this school."

"I'm really excited about graduation,” said Rashaad Toney, Communication Major. “It's a really liberating experience to be able and go out to the real world and experience real life things outside of college."
