Simmons signs free agent contract with Steelers

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former East Carolina offensive guard Will Simmons has agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers on an undrafted free agent contract according to a release by the National Football League organization early Sunday.

Simmons will initiate his professional career by participating in the team's mandatory rookie mini-camp, which runs Friday through Sunday, May 16-18.

A four-year letterman and three-year starter at the right guard position, Simmons earned All-Conference USA honors as a junior and senior. He opened 38 of 42 career contests and played a key protection role in the top four passing seasons in Pirate history, including a record-breaking 4,265-yard total in 2013. Simmons' units helped rack up over 50 offensive single-game and single-season standards, and earned national Top 10 rankings in major statistical categories such as passing offense (8th/2010), scoring offense (8th/2013), third-down conversion percentage (7th/2013) and redzone efficiency (3rd/2012, 5th/2010).

The Pirates produced over 400 yards of offense on 10 occasions during Simmons' senior campaign, a year in which he blocked for a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver. His leadership in the trenches paved the way for the program's third post-season appearance in four years, which was capped with a 37-20 victory over Ohio in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

Simmons, 23, is an Ahoskie (N.C.) native who prepped at Hertford County High School.
