Dempsey says Fort Bragg should expect layoffs

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. - The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says Fort Bragg will need to make adjustments as the military prepares for downsizing.

Gen. Martin Dempsey was in Durham to give the commencement address Sunday at Duke University. On Saturday, he spoke with reporters about several issues, including Fort Bragg's future.

Although many Fort Bragg forces rely on the 440th Airlift Wing for a response to troubled areas, that wing could be eliminated. It has 1,200 reserve and active duty airmen, and budget documents recently released call for retiring the entire wing's fleet of C-130s

He said people likely will be laid off from Fort Bragg through both sequestration and the proposed budget cuts to military and civilian jobs.

However, he says Fort Bragg itself isn't at risk.
