NC governor wants ID before jobless benefits

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory says the unemployed should be required to show photo identification in person to receive North Carolina jobless benefits.

The governor said Monday he wants the General Assembly this year to pass a law requiring an applicant to present photo ID as part of the benefit process. The Division of Employment Security already has been asking for the ID in recent months as a way to curb fraud. McCrory says he wants a state law to back up that requirement.

Division chief Dale Folwell says most young people already are required to show a photo ID to their employer when they start their job.

McCrory and Folwell also want the legislature to tweak the work search requirements for the unemployed. The General Assembly reconvenes Wednesday.
