Westbound lanes of Wright Memorial Bridge reopened

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The westbound lanes of the Wright Memorial Bridge over Currituck Sound have reopened in time for the summer tourist season.

Officials from the N.C. Department of Transportation reopened the lanes on Wednesday.

NCDOT closed the westbound bridge last September to allow crews to replace the top portion of the existing concrete on the bridge deck with a layer of latex-modified concrete. The change will smooth out humps in each span of the bridge and provide a better riding surface.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Garifo said a wet, cold and windy winter slowed the work, adding that two-thirds of the project is done.

The bridge will close again in September, and crews will have until next May to finish the remaining one-third of the bridge.
