Flash flood watch in effect for NC mountains

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the North Carolina mountains as a strong, slow-moving cold front approaches the state.

Forecasters posted the watch effective Wednesday until late Thursday. Up to 3 inches of rain is possible in the watch area. Some places could get as much as 5 inches.

The cold front is expected to reach western North Carolina and northeastern Georgia on Thursday. Moisture moving along the front will spark thunderstorms, and while the soil in the watch area is considered relatively dry, the potential exists for enough rainfall in a short period of time to lead to flash flooding.

Conditions may result in the flood watch being expanded to the Upstate in South Carolina as well as the western piedmont on North Carolina.
