ELIZABETHTOWN, NC -

A Robeson County sheriff's deputy and a woman with him has died in a personal watercraft accident on the Cape Fear River.

Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey told WRAL-TV Wednesday that he received a call from the Bladen County Sheriff's Office informing him of the incident.

Deputy Thomas Bradley Carter, age 30, who was off duty at the time, died in the accident on the river in Elizabethtown, according to WRAL.

A woman, identified as Charlotte Paige McLellan, 27, of Lumberton, also died in the incident, which is under investigation by the state Wildlife Resources Commission.

Carter lived in Pembroke and had been a deputy since Nov. 2010, the Robesonian newspaper reported.

The incident happened near Lock and Dam 2 on the Cape Fear River around 7 am, Sealey told the newspaper.
