ECU to buy 4 properties surrounding chancellor's house

GREENVILLE, N.C. -
East Carolina University is getting ready to expand the chancellor's residence. The university is buying four surrounding properties- 404 S. Jarvis, 405 S. Summit, 407 S. Summit and 409 S. Summit.

The ECU Board of Trustees in April approved the purchase. Total cost for the properties is estimated to be a little less than $1.2 million.
The university has not decided on a final plan for expansion but officials say keeping the chancellor's residence close to campus is essential and getting these four properties is a key part of that.

ECU Spokeswoman Mary Schulken said, "That is the best location for it. This particular residence has a lot of history, it's beautiful, but it needs to be modernized, it needs to be ADA compliant. It needs a catering kitchen to accommodate large groups and step one is to purchase and secure the properties."

Privately-raised money, not state appropriations, will pay for the purchase of those properties and will likely pay for the renovations as well.
