Several Memorial Day ceremonies took place across the East on Monday.

In Greenville, Master Sgt. Ray Everett spoke to crowd at the town common. He expressed his disappointment with Memorial Day losing its meaning and told the crowd schools should do more to remind our young people what service have done to ensure we live in a free country.

In Jacksonville, hundreds convened at the N.C. State Veterans Cemetery adjacent to Camp Johnson. Retired marine, Guy Hunter, discussed losing friends during his time in Vietnam. Many veterans and active military members were in attendance. The JROTC and Young Marines also participated in the event. Five pages of names were read aloud to remember the veterans who have died over the past year.

In Washington, a service was held at Veterans Park on East Third Street. The event was sponsored by The Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary. Former Washington mayor and retired Coast Guard Captain, Stewart Rumley, was the guest speaker. Around 200 people attended the event.
