Atlantic Beach Councilman dies

Posted: Updated:
The town of Atlantic Beach is mourning the loss of a councilman.

Mayor Trace Cooper confirms Rick Poillon, 68, died at his home on Friday. It is believed to be from natural causes.

Poillon was elected in October and started serving his term in December. Cooper says he was very active from the start and brought a lot of energy to the group. Poillon was a retired CEO from Pepsi Bottling Ventures of Raleigh. Cooper says this helped the council’s ability to execute their plans. Cooper says Poillon didn't just want to talk about things, he wanted to do things.

Cooper says Poillon often said, “I may not be from Atlantic Beach, but I got here as quickly as I could.” Cooper says he and Poillon became close friends over the years, calling him smart and funny. He says the town of Atlantic Beach will miss him, and so will Cooper.

No word yet on any funeral arrangements from his family. The vacancy on the council isn’t something the mayor has begun thinking about, but he says the town’s charter gives the remaining members of the council the authority to appoint someone to fill the vacancy.
