Same-sex military spouses get in-state UNC tuition

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The University of North Carolina system has directed that in-state tuition be charged to the same-sex spouses of military personnel as long as the couple married in a state that recognizes same-sex marriage.
Fayetteville State spokesman Jeff Womble told the Fayetteville Observer (http://bit.ly/1hBNs8I ) that the school has been directed by the UNC system to offer in-state tuition to such spouses to comply with federal regulations.
In-state tuition is less expensive than that paid by out-of-state students.
North Carolina does not sanction same-sex marriage. But that conflicts with federal rules that require colleges to offer in-state tuition to all military spouses, regardless of sexual orientation.
Fayetteville State had asked the UNC system for clarification on the conflict.
