Boat safety: what you need to know

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. - With warmer weather here, a lot of people across the East will be heading out to area waterways. But there are some things you need to know before you get on a boat.

First, make sure the boat has enough life vest for everyone on board in case of an emergency. State law requires children under the age of 13 to wear a flotation device at all times on the boat.

Those who sell boats also make it a point to educate individuals about boat safety.

Jules Norwood is the vice president of Carolina Wind Yachting Center in Washington.

"I guess the other thing for being a safe boater is being a knowledgeable boater and there are courses available for both adults and kids to help you learn more about what you're doing on the water," Norwood said.

You also need to make sure you keep up with the latest weather conditions to ensure it's safe to be out on the water.
