Augusta Named Top Spot For Tech Jobs

Posted: Updated:
Augusta - Augusta is gaining national recognition for its economic accomplishments.

The Garden City is one of the fastest-growing cities for information technology jobs, according to a report by NewGeography.com.

The site, which is devoted to analyzing and discussing the places where people live and work, ranked Augusta #10 on their list of “Cities Winning the Battle for Information Jobs in 2014” for midsize cities.

Last year, Augusta ranked #80.

The economic improvement was expected -- but not this quickly, said Walter Sprouse, the Director of Economic Development for Richmond County.

The ranking puts Augusta in a competitive spot when it comes to jobs, Sprouse added.

“I’m glad we are where we are right now, because a lot of communities see this now as something they need to do, and they’re trying to figure out how to do it," Sprouse said. "We’ve been doing it now for a few years.”

With the addition of the Cyber Command unit at Fort Gordon, the city is preparing to bring in more military contractors. The Economic Development Authority has already begun recruiting.

"One of the things that we have set up is a task force on Cyber Command, as far as the types of companies that will be coming in," said Sprouse. "Not if they come in, when they come in. We've hired a consultant that deals with military contractors."
