Summer lunches for all kids

Posted: Updated:
Augusta, GA - It's a question many of us have never had to ask, when will I eat again? But for some kids it's a reality. In summer of 2013, Richmond county alone, gave out over 124,000 lunches to kids in need.

There are over 50 places in Richmond county serving lunch or breakfast to kids under 18. Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club realized the problem facing thousands of families each year.

"This program is very important because there is a lot of children out there that depend on school lunches, that are served throughout the school year, and when summer comes, they might not have access to that same food that they would during the school year," Brittney Gregory, Outcome Coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club said.

Brittney, among many other people, are responsible for feeding every child that walks through their door. She says they follow USDA law while making it kid-friendly.

Food isn't the only thing the Boys and Girls Club has to offer. The club also runs a summer camp for all kids just looking to have fun. They play basketball, pool, as well as read and learn from teachers with the club.

"All of our club members are very diverse our mission statement says we serve those who needs us the most and we truly do," Brittney said.
