Doctors warn of dangers heat present to those exercising

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Exercising is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But with hot and humid weather here, doctors warn everyone to take precautions.

Lacy Hobgood is a physician at ECU. He says the humid conditions we often have here in the East can cause the body to overheat quicker.

Pools become a popular alternative for those looking to exercise, but Hobgood warns there are misconceptions that some have about working out in the pool.

"You still can get dehydrated," Hobgood said. "You will still sweat when you are swimming and so you'll still have some evaporative water lose, and so it's important to continue to drink plenty of liquids even if you are in the pool."

Hobgood also says wearing light-colored, loose fitting clothing is a good idea. He also says people should avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day.
