Thompson Hardwood Warehouse Destroyed in Fire

Chief Charles Wasdin, with the Hazlehurst Fire Department tells WSAV that the fire burned the warehouse and office buildings to the ground. 

Chief Wasdin says were able to save the saw mill on site, calling it "their bread and butter," but the warehouse held $30 million in wood product inventory.  He says two his firefighters were injured while battling the fire, suffering heat exhaustion.  They have been treated and released at a local hospital. 

The fire began on Monday morning and burned for more than 24 hours. Chief Wasdin says at the height of the fire, there were 34 fire departments and 127 firefighters on scene. 

Phil Jarriel, the VP of Operations at Thompson Hardwoods says 24 offices have been relocated to temporary facilities and are up and running. He says they expect to being operations at 6am on Wednesday morning.

The company adds that they have had a 'tremendous' outpouring from the local community, including a local church. The First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst is hosting a event at 11 on Wednesday morning, for people affected by the fire. They say all employees and their families are urged to attend.

Firefighters are currently battling a large fire at Thompson Hardwood on Baxley Highway in Hazlehurst. 

Jeff Davis County Sheriff  Preston Bohannon says the fire started on Monday morning. At this time it is unclear how it began, but Sheriff Bohannon says they do not suspect foul play.

Sheriff Bohannon says about 12 counties and agencies are battling the fire and he expects that they will be on scene until at least midnight. The Red Cross is also on the scene, providing assistance to first responders.

Officials have closed Baxley Highway as they work to contain the fire. They say the hope to have it partially open by nightfall on Monday.
