Newport man pleads guilty to kidnapping 12-year-old girl

NEWPORT, N.C. - A Carteret County man could spend up to 50 years in prison, after pleading guilty Monday to several charges.
     
39-year-old Timothy Newman of Newport pleaded guilty to 1st-degree statutory rape. He admitted he kidnapped a then-12-year-old Newport girl in late September, 2012.

Newman was already registered a sex offender at the time.
     
He lured the girl from her home through text messages and took her to Florida before law enforcement tracked them down.
     
Newman will be at least 70-years-old at the time of his possible release.
