Augusta, GA - One Augusta Commissioner feels it's time to raise taxes.

Commissioner Bill Lockett says the state law allowing manufactures to not pay sales taxes on energy will cost Augusta $4 million by 2016.

Lockett says that revenue must be made up and says, as the city prepares for next year's budget, a two percent excise tax on industry and a property tax increase must be considered.

"We cannot cut the department budgets, we cannot continue to not allow pay increases for our employees. We got to have the revenue and the only place we can get the revenue is implementing the excise tax that the General Assembly recommended last year," Lockett said.

For this year's budget, city leaders said no to implementing the excise tax or a property tax increase. However, the city will not officially set the tax rate until next month.
