Tynita Butts finishes second at NCAA Outdoor Championships

Posted: Updated:
EUGENE, Ore. -  ECU redshirt senior jumper Tynita Butts tied for second place in the women’s high jump at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships en route to earning her sixth-career All-America honor.

Butts registered a clearance of 1.86-meters (6’ 1.25”) in the event as she tied for second along with Kansas State’s Alyx Treasure. Her mark was just one inch shy of national champion Leontia Kallenou of Georgia who tallied a mark of 1.89-meters (6’ 2.25”).

The Alexandria, Va., native finished her East Carolina career as the school record holder in both the high jump (1.91-meters) and long jump (6.22-meters). The six-time All-American qualified for the NCAA Championships every year in which she competed at the collegiate level.

This season Butts recorded four first-place finishes in the high jump, won the event at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships and collected a First Team All-Conference USA nod.

Butts’ second place finish in the women’s high jump, marks the highest-ever finish for a Pirate at the NCAA Championships.
