GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks received a 16 percent pay raise as a result of the Board of Commissioners approving next fiscal year's budget.

Sheriff Elks salary of $85,990 will now be $99,748.

"I think it's a step in the right direction in getting the salaries readjusted at the sheriff's office starting with the sheriff and then looking forward to getting the deputies' salaries adjusted," Sheriff Elks said.

The sheriff isn't the only one cashing in on the new budget.

Pitt County Schools will receive an additional $273,000 in funding from the county bringing their total to $500,000.

Pitt County Animal Control received hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional funding in order to pay for costs of a new canine control ordinance.

The ordinance requires dog owners living in unincorporated areas of the county to pay a $10-20 license for having a dog.
