BIRMINGHAM, AL - Today marks the 10th anniversary of the deadliest day in the Birmingham Police Department's history.

On June 17, 2004, three Birmingham police officers were shot and killed. Officers Carlos Owen, Harvey Chisolm and Robert Bennett were attempting to serve a misdemeanor warrant at a suspected drug house in the Ensley area, when Kerry Spencer and Nathaniel Woods opened fire on the officers with an automatic rifle. The three officers died at the scene -- a fourth, Sgt. Michael Collins, was also shot, but survived.

Officer Owen had been with the Birmingham Police Department for 26 years. Officer Chisolm served for six years and Officer Bennett had served  three years.

Annetta Nunn, the police chief at the time of the shooting, says she remembers it like it was yesterday. The incident took a toll on the entire department, but Nunn said she pulled through thanks to the strength of the officers around her.

"I got strength from them. Because if the officers still patrolled, stop vehicles, do their normal day to day duties, under those situations, certainly whatever I had to do, I should have been able to do it," Nunn said.

Current Birmingham Police Chief AC Roper served the Hoover Police Department at the time of the incident, but said this shooting impacted officers everywhere.

"I remember a couple says later on a Saturday morning, I believe it was a couple of days after the incident, driving to the house and sitting outside of it and just reflecting and think and that was just such an overwhelming sense of sadness that three public servants lost their lives," he said. "We can never forget that and we've moved forward. And even now as chief we want to remember the traditions and sacrifice that our people make."

A memorial for the three fallen officers is planned for 6:30 p.m. Their families are expected to attend.

Kerry Spencer and Nathaniel Woods were convicted of murdering the officers. Both men are on death row as they continue to appeal their convictions.
