ROANOKE (WSLS) - The primary objective with traffic safety checkpoints are to catch unlicensed, drunk, or impaired drivers, but now another benefit is to create a police presence in hopes of deterring other crimes like larcenies and shoplifting which police see go up in the summer months.

There are four platoons in the police department and each one does a checkpoint at least once every six weeks. Each location is chosen based on high crimes, speeding, etc. They are not chosen randomly.

These checkpoints are part of phase two in stopping shoplifting in the city. The initiative will happen in several steps during the coming months to target offenders. The first phase happened in the beginning of June. Seven teams of Roanoke Police officers served five men with indictments involving multiple counts of buying stolen goods.

While it may take time to see the positive effects of this initiative, Capt. Sam Roman says it'll help with their overall mission.

"As with other crimes the goal of the police department is to decrease crime over a period of time that's what we make our goals and objectives to decrease not only shoplifters but larcenies and violent crimes as well," says Capt. Roman.
