Pitt Co. Offering Free Food to Six Schools

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Six Pitt County schools will offer free breakfast and lunch to all of its students starting next year.

Those schools are Belvoir Elementary, Lakeforest Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Pactolus Elementary, South Greenville Elementary and Wellcome Middle School.

It's part of the Community Eligibility Provision  in the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.

Most students at these schools are already on the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program.

School spokesman Brock Letchworth says the system will actually save money thanks to this program.

"It provides a student with a breakfast or lunch for free every day," Letchworth said. "In some of the environments where these kids and these schools are coming from, that's not always good so a hungry child can't learn so we're feeding them so that can only help us academically."

The program begins next school year with more schools possibly being added.
