Several facing charges after Greene County church break-in

Three men and two juveniles are facing charges after deputies say they broke into a Greene County church and stole a safe and church van.


Sheriff Lemmie Smith says it happened June 12 at Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist church and Christian Academy in Hookerton. Smith says a safe with an undisclosed amount of money and a church van were reported stolen.


Deputies were able to recover the stolen property through interviews and evidence which also lead to the arrest of three men: 25-year-old Steven Woods, 16-year-old Dexter Duncan and 17-year-old Ta’vein Joyner. All three men are from the Snow Hill area.


Woods and Duncan were charged with breaking and entering a place of worship, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny of a motor vehicle, safecracking and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering. Joyner was charged with safecracking and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering.


Woods received a $50,000 secured bond, Duncan received $80,000 secured bond and Joyner received a $2,500 secured bond. Two juveniles are also being charged in reference to the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
