Greene County teacher earns STEM Teacher of the Month award

Posted: Updated:
For Greene Central High School's Carrie Anne Miller, her years in the classroom have seen it's share of challenges as a math teacher. "When I first started teaching 16 years ago, I never ever ever would have thought I'd have a paperless classroom or using the skills and teaching the students skills that I had to learn myself first," she said.

Greene county is one of only three school systems in the state participating in the North Carolina Virtual Public School's "Race to the Top" Stem project. In the program, a virtual teacher leads the classes online, while a classroom teacher facilitates activities and answers questions. Miller's had to step out of her comfort zone, learning to teach in this type of environment. "I had to change, definitely the way I teach, the way that I think, the way I deliver instruction," Miller explained.

Classes across the east, have now shifted from textbook teaching to more project-based. This gives students more control of how they learn. This new way of doing thing is new for Miller's students too and they say she keeps them motivated.

Miller says staying positive is crucial in keeping up with constant changes in education and she knows it's key to keeping up with her students.

That's why she's June's STEM Teacher of the month.
